Zlatan Zuperfly for Nike

Society 46 was approached by Naked Stockholm to create a new interactive video game. We placed a 360 degree
camera on Zlatan’s head, and took the users on a journey from Zlatan’s point of view. The production was made in no time
but reached impressing numbers on social media.

Grolsch Photo Machines for Grolsch

An app that takes your digital photos into the real analog world and back.

Grolsch Photo Machines take your digital photos into the real analog world and back. Upload an image and it will be displayed by one of our machines, be photographed and sent back to you. The machines are located at various places in Stockholm.

We developed Grolsch Photo Machines to let people document and share their lives in even more exciting ways. Nowadays all pictures look similar because they are processed by the same digital photo filters. There is nothing unpredictable or analog about the process. But we like the unpredictable and we like the analog: they make the world and our lives more interesting.
Try processing the same picture twice – it won’t look exactly the same.

Swedish Radio Plus for Swedish National Radio

Along with Forsman & Bodenfors, we have developed www.sverigesradio.se/plus. This is a brand new interactive radio service that is available for a limited time on the web, your mobile phone and tablets.
A site where you as a user listen to selected programs of the Swedish Radio in real time – while simultaneously annotate and add photos or videos directly in the programs.
Radio 3.0 in real-time & HTML 5.

The Polo Principle for Wolkswagen

Together with DDB Copenhagen and Volkswagen, Society 46 produced a campaign that put the power of a 3D printer in the hands of the people. Volkswagen has built the Polo on one principle – to make the best technology available for all and not just the elite.
A panel of judges will select the 40 most creative looking prototype designs to be 3D-printed and exhibited in Copenhagen in May 2012. After the exhibition, the physical prototypes will be handed over to their respective creators. Finally, out of the 40 best designs,
one winner will get his/her design made into an actual Polo and get to use it for two months during the summer.

The Sound Of Football for Pepsi

We’re very pleased to announce the release of our Pepsi Refresh – Sound of Football project. In collaboration with Åkestam.Holst and the Pepsi Refresh project,
we accepted the challenge to invent a new way to play football for visually impaired people.
We developed a new platform with a tracking system and a 3D sound landscape. Take a look!

Co:Create for Society 46

Society 46 was invited to be a part of the Higher Pitch exhibition in London.
We decided to do something with mobile phones, but staying away from apps as we wanted
as many users as possible to interact. Our artwork, CoCreate is a collaborative drawing space, an installation where mobile phones are connected to the same
canvas through our real-time socket server. With the acceleration sensors in our smart phones physical movements are transferred into digital marks.

YouLive for Society 46

Prime came to Society 46 with high ambitions: Can you create a unique new way to experience music live online?
Our proposal was the user’s actually become a person in the audience and to interact with the artist in real time.
The users can cheer, and as they do this, everyone else will see a pair of actual hands rise in the audience and clap.
The artist sees this on a huge plasma monitor in front of the stage and can therefore instantly comment on the fans interactivity. Society 46 used a custom built live server, that we are alone in the world with, to engage thousands of fans in real time, letting them communicate in new ways with each other and the artists.

This technology is perfect for any live event, on any platform. Fashion, sports, music, entertainment, TV shows etc.

To the left is the actual app that the user sees. To the right we placed the info that the artist sees.

How we use our Creative Lab to make products

Having a creative lab has been a huge success for us. It has won us over 20 awards, and we use it to create new business in mainly two different ways. I’m gonna show you two examples.

In the first one we have used a technology that was invented in the lab in a marketing campaign for Pepsi to build a global buzz around the brand. In the second example I will demonstrate a technology that we are now creating a startup around.

Pepsi — The Sound Of Football — http://vimeo.com/35363734
— PR value of over $30M
— Won over 10 awards (incl. D&AD and Webby)
— Discovery channel made a documentary
— Released all source code open source
— Scientists from big universities in this field
— We are looking at taking the next steps

YouLive — http://vimeo.com/17088043
— Allowing millions to interact in real time
— We are now turning this into a company and will give our first concerts in 2013
— Reached over 29M people
— Won Webby and Cannes awards
— We use this technology in sports, politics, game shows and many other fields

The major business challenge for a production company is that we sell time. We sell our brains for a thousand dollars per day. No matter how flattering, even if we sell all our time it’s not going to be a great business like Spotify, Facebook, Apple or Google where you create something once and get payed for it over and over again (simply put).

Society 46 can apparently come up with awesome ideas that gets everyones attention. But image if these projects had been innovative $1 apps that got the same big media coverage. We could have sold many million. Not to mention the good feeling of creating something sustainable rather than a campaign that runs for eight weeks.

Many ideas we come up with in the Creative Lab are worthy of being their own companies. So, even if we use an idea in a campaign we can create a company around it if it’s good enough. Then we will already have the technology we need and can basically just rebrand it.

Of course we also come up with ideas that we want to go straight to product, and then we do that to.

Then what do we do in order to create these ideas?
Well nothing to be honest. Living and breathing digital means we come up with awesome ideas all the time, at the office, together with friends at parties or in brainstorm meetings for our client work. We don’t even think about it. The dynamics of just working together in an office and being who we are is enough for great ideas to surface.

Being a programmer or an engineer and loving what you do means that we are thinking about what to create next all the time, twenty four seven. And since we’re checking Hacker News and other hacking and startup blogs a hundred times per day every day we are always in the front, and it’s only natural we create true technical innovation.

We inject into the lab by letting people spend time really creating these projects. And if we dive on new cool technology we buy it and see what we can use it for.

So, how do we select what ideas and projects to realise?
Well Darwinism. Survival of the fittest. When an idea starts growing in my head what do I do? I send out an email about it. I talk to co workers and friends about it. If we then start believing and burning for the project enough to actually make it happen, that means the idea was worth making.

How do we fund projects?
We can pitch it to a client, we can seek funds or even kick start it. Or we do it in our free working time, between projects so we can own them to 100%.

Seven fresh awards!

These came in in the last two weeks.
Lots Of Love (LOL?) to everyone involved!
Do we need to say how fucking proud we are?
